Muay Thai rules and round lengths

Last reviewed 10 Oct 2026

Elite bouts in the IFMA PDF of 22 December 2017 are three rounds of three minutes, with one minute rest. The May 2026 PDF's round table did not extract cleanly, so this page does not invent a 2026 round length. A stadium five-round card is the stadium's format, not an IFMA rule.

Key facts:

  • 2017 PDF: elite 3 x 3 minutes, 1 minute rest. Youth bouts in that PDF are shorter.
  • 2026 PDF, filename 11 May 2026: round table not cleanly extracted. Do not cite a 2026 time from this page.
  • Ten-point must. No fractions. Gum shield not red or pink.
  • RWS: 3-round bouts, 5-round main, on the stadium site. Not IFMA.

A beginner class is none of those rows until the coach says it is. Do not tell a new student they must survive three elite rounds on night one.

A few rules that did extract

The 2026 PDF scores ten-point must and does not allow fractions. The gum shield is form-fitted and is not red or pink. YOOT, YAEK and CHOCK are the referee commands for stop, break, and box. Section 15.6 bars ankle protection in the contest. The ankle-wrap page is the cloth version of that sentence. Elbows, clinch and knees, as the difference from a kickboxing class, are on the kickboxing comparison. We did not open a Dutch rules PDF.

The long scoring note, including Wai Kru, stays on the scoring guide. Duplicating it would make two pages to correct when a PDF changes.

FAQs

How long is a Muay Thai round?

In the IFMA PDF of 22 December 2017, elite and competitive bouts are three rounds of three minutes with one minute rest. Youth bouts in that PDF are shorter. The May 2026 PDF's round table did not extract cleanly, so check that PDF before you cite a current IFMA time. A gym's beginner round can be shorter. The coach's clock is the class. It is not the 2017 elite line.

Why do some fights go five rounds?

Because the promoter says so. Rajadamnern's New Power and Petchyindee fights are five rounds on the stadium's own format. RWS, on Rajadamnern's site, uses three-round bouts and a five-round championship main, with open scoring. None of that rewrites IFMA. The scoring page is the longer version. This page is the round table and the warning about which PDF you mean.

What else is in the 2026 PDF?

Ten-point must, with no fractions. A gum shield must be worn, form-fitted, and not red or pink. YOOT stops the action, YAEK breaks the clinch, and CHOCK sends you back to boxing range. Section 15.6 bars ankle protection in the contest, including a cloth anklet and tape. We are not reprinting the whole scoring essay. Open that page for Wai Kru and how a round is marked.

Do stadium rules match IFMA?

Not automatically. A Saturday show can use the stadium's round count and still be Muay Thai. An IFMA bout uses the IFMA sheet for that competition. Your interclub uses the promoter and your coach. The fight-plan draft calls a common interclub length editorial, not a rule, and this page does not upgrade it. Read the entry form.
