Muay Thai vs kickboxing

Last reviewed 20 Oct 2026

Muay Thai uses the fists, the elbows, the knees and the shins, and it scores the clinch. Kickboxing, in the UK classes people actually join, usually keeps the punches and the kicks and limits or removes the clinch and the elbows. The rulebooks we opened are IFMA's and WAKO's amateur PDFs, cited below. This page does not invent pro round counts we did not read.

Key facts:

  • IFMA, rules PDF dated 22 Dec 2017: elite and competitive bouts are 3 x 3 minutes, one minute rest. The 11 May 2026 PDF (v3.057) is the file to check for current round times. Its round table did not extract cleanly.
  • IFMA uses the ten-point must system. The winner of a round gets 10. No fractions.
  • Wai Kru is required before round one in IFMA. A mongkon is for that ritual.
  • WAKO ring disciplines (rulebook PDF): K-1 style allows knees but not elbows or the clinch. Low kick and full contact ban knees, elbows and the clinch.
  • No UK drop-in median is published while the price-sample method is checked by hand.
  • Elbows to the spine, neck cranks and "just stand and trade" are not coaching we will write down.

Choosing a striking class

What changes in the room

Question Muay Thai, as IFMA and UK gyms describe it Kickboxing, as a UK class usually sells it
Elbows Legal in IFMA, with the ruleset's target limits Often absent from a beginner class. We will not say "always illegal" without the PDF
Knees A core weapon Sometimes in, sometimes out. Ask
Clinch A scored phase. The referee can break it Often a brief grab, then a break. Ask
Kick target Shin to leg and body, and the teep Often the same kicks, without the clinch that follows
Ritual Wai Kru before round one in IFMA Not part of a kickboxing ruleset we are citing
Gloves UK gyms commonly ask for 16oz to spar (Atlas copy, 8 Oct 2026) Ask. Do not assume the ounce transfers

If the timetable says "Muay Thai / kickboxing", it is one class until the coach says otherwise. Ask whether you will clinch and whether elbows are in the syllabus this month.

Scoring, briefly

IFMA gives the round winner 10 points and the other athlete fewer. Stadium cards are not that sheet. Rajadamnern's New Power and Petchyindee bouts are five rounds because the stadium site says so. RWS uses three-round bouts and a five-round main. Kickboxing promotions use their own maths. We will not print a percentage for "kicks count double". The scoring guide stays with what the PDFs support.

Weapons: eight limbs vs four (or six)

The IFMA, the international federation for amateur Muaythai, defines a scoring Muaythai skill as a punch, kick, knee or elbow applied with force. Fists, elbows, knees and shins (two of each) make the eight limbs.

Kickboxing is less uniform. The World Association of Kickboxing Organizations (WAKO) runs three "ring" disciplines, and each allows a different toolkit, according to WAKO's rulebook:

Rule set Punches Kicks to legs Knees Elbows Clinch
Muay Thai (IFMA) Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes
K-1 style (WAKO) Yes Yes Yes No No
Low kick (WAKO) Yes Yes (thigh only) No No No
Full contact (WAKO) Yes No (above the waist only) No No No

In WAKO's full contact, legal targets are the head and the torso above the waist. Low kick adds kicks to the thigh between the waist and the knee. Both list knee and elbow attacks and intentional clinching as illegal. WAKO's current K-1 style rules add knees and kicks to the legs, and list attacks with the elbow as illegal.

The clinch: the biggest difference

In Muay Thai, the clinch is a core part of the sport. Fighters tie up at close range, fight for head and arm position, land knees and try to off-balance each other. IFMA's rules give the referee a specific command to break a clinch, and they penalise holding a leg and pushing forward more than two steps without striking.

In K-1 style kickboxing, the clinch is banned. WAKO's K-1 rules state that clinching or holding is not permitted at any time, including to set up a knee, and that knees can be thrown freely because there's no clinch. Grabbing an opponent's leg is also illegal under those rules.

What this means in practice:

  • Muay Thai classes spend real time on clinch work: neck control, knees, sweeps and off-balancing.
  • Kickboxing classes spend more of that time on punching combinations, footwork and fast exchanges at range.

If you want to learn to fight from close range, Muay Thai covers it. If you'd rather keep things at punching and kicking distance, kickboxing does.

Training differences

Both sports share a lot: skipping, shadow boxing, bag work and conditioning. The differences show up in the details.

Muay Thai training usually includes:

  • Thai pads held on the forearms, so your coach can take kicks, knees and elbows.
  • Clinch rounds with a partner.
  • Teeps (push kicks) and checking kicks with the shin.
  • A more upright stance, with weight often on the back leg so you can lift the front leg to block kicks.
  • Shin conditioning. Muay Thai uses the shin to kick and to block, so regular bag and pad work gradually gets your legs used to impact. There's no magic shortcut; if you have pain that doesn't settle, see a professional.

Kickboxing training usually includes:

  • Focus mitts for fast punching combinations.
  • More footwork and lateral movement.
  • Combinations that flow from punches into kicks.
  • A slightly lower, more boxing-like stance in many gyms.

Gear differences

The kit list is almost the same. What changes:

  • Gloves. Both use boxing-style gloves; 16oz is the usual UK sparring requirement in either. Muay Thai-style gloves often have a flatter palm that helps in the clinch. See best Muay Thai gloves UK and what oz gloves.
  • Shin guards. Both use them for sparring. Muay Thai guards typically cover the shin and instep; some kickboxing formats use similar shin-and-instep guards. See best Muay Thai shin guards UK.
  • Shorts. Muay Thai shorts are short and wide-legged for kicking and kneeing. Kickboxers often wear longer shorts or trousers, depending on the discipline.
  • Elbow pads. Sometimes used in Muay Thai sparring or amateur competition; not needed in kickboxing.

Which is better for fitness, self-defence or competing?

Fitness. Both give excellent conditioning. Pick the class you enjoy and can attend regularly.

Self-defence. Muay Thai's clinch work and elbows cover close-range situations that K-1 style kickboxing deliberately excludes. That's a real advantage for self-defence. But any striking art trains timing, distance and composure, and a good kickboxing gym will still teach you a lot.

Competing. Both sports have amateur and professional competition in the UK, run by a mix of promotions and associations. Ask your gym which shows its fighters enter and under which rules. See our events calendar for UK Muay Thai shows.

Moving between them. Skills transfer both ways: stance, footwork, punching and kicking are shared. The main adjustment going from kickboxing to Muay Thai is learning the clinch and elbows; going the other way, it's dropping them.

K-1 and "Dutch" kickboxing

"K-1" is used today as the name of a rule set: punches, kicks and knees, no elbows, no clinching. WAKO runs a K-1 style discipline for amateurs.

"Dutch kickboxing" is a style name you'll hear in gyms rather than a separate competition rulebook. It's generally used to describe a punch-heavy style that finishes combinations with low kicks. If a gym advertises it, ask which competition rules its fighters use.

Which one to start

Start with the class you will attend. A kickboxing gym ten minutes away beats a Muay Thai gym you visit twice and abandon. If you want the clinch and the knees, say so before you pay for a month. The UK directory lists 671 Muay Thai gyms. It is not a kickboxing census.

Injuries are part of both sports. An ankle that will not take weight is an NHS question, not a style question. The ankle page has the wording we actually read. Neither sport is a self-defence licence. The law page is separate.

Muay Thai vs boxing

Boxing is the fists. Muay Thai adds the other six limbs and the clinch. A boxing gym will make your hands better. It will not teach you a legal elbow or a dump from the clinch. Cross-training is a coach's decision, not a forum's. We have no boxing price sample.

Finding a Muay Thai gym vs a kickboxing gym in the UK

Many UK gyms teach both, and the sign above the door doesn't always tell you what's taught. Before joining:

  • Ask whether they teach elbows and the clinch. If they do, it's Muay Thai in practice.
  • Ask which rules their fighters compete under (Muay Thai, K-1, low kick).
  • Look at the timetable. A gym with separate clinch or Thai pad sessions is teaching Muay Thai.
  • Try a class. Most gyms offer a trial.

Search the UK Muay Thai gym directory or all gyms, and if you're completely new, read Muay Thai for beginners first.

FAQs

What is the difference between Muay Thai and kickboxing?

Muay Thai includes elbows, knees and a scored clinch. IFMA requires a Wai Kru before round one and scores with the ten-point must system. A UK kickboxing class usually emphasises punches and kicks and may limit the clinch. WAKO's amateur K-1-style PDF is cited on this page; we are not printing pro round counts we did not read. Ask the gym what this month's syllabus includes.

Is Muay Thai harder than kickboxing?

It is a different rule set, not a toughness contest. Elbows and a long clinch add skills and add ways to get hurt. A kickboxing class can be the harder hour if the coach runs it that way. Pick the class you will attend. The UK Muay Thai directory lists 671 gyms. No drop-in median is published while the price-sample method is checked by hand.

Can I do both?

Yes, if the coaches know. The gloves may match. The habits may not. A long clinch that is normal on Tuesday can be a foul on Thursday. Tell each coach what the other class is teaching. We are not recommending a weekly split, because we have not tested one.

How is a Muay Thai fight scored?

Under IFMA, the winner of the round gets 10 points and there are no fractions. The 2017 PDF sets elite bouts at three rounds of three minutes. Stadium shows differ. Rajadamnern's New Power and Petchyindee cards are five rounds on the stadium's own site. The scoring guide keeps the documents separate.

Can I use kickboxing gloves for Muay Thai?

Yes. Most gloves sold for kickboxing are boxing-style gloves, which work fine for Muay Thai classes. What matters most is the weight: 16oz for sparring in most UK gyms.

Are knees allowed in kickboxing?

In K-1 style, yes, but without clinching. WAKO's full contact and low kick rules list knee attacks as illegal. Rules vary by discipline, so check the rule set.

Which is better for self-defence, Muay Thai or kickboxing?

Muay Thai covers more close-range fighting because it includes elbows and the clinch. Both teach striking, distance and composure, and either is far better than no training.

Should I learn Muay Thai or kickboxing first?

Choose the better gym near you. Skills carry over both ways, and many people train both over time.
