Muay Thai heavy bags
Last reviewed 10 Oct 2026
Thai boxing bag is searched 720 times a month in the UK, and muay thai heavy bag 480 (Keyword Planner, 10 Oct 2026). Banana and straight bags are shapes shops sell. This page does not state a kilogram or a centimetre. Have a qualified person check any joist before you hang a bag.
Key facts:
- No bag price, fill weight, or ceiling rating has been verified. Figures you remember from a shop page are not reprinted here.
- Do not hang a bag from plasterboard. Renters need the landlord's say-so. A bracket is a building question for someone who can see the joist.
- Our 12-week heavy-bag programme is not on sale yet.
- NHS still applies if a bag session hurts an ankle or a wrist. This page is not a rehab plan.
A long bag in a garage, not a product shot we licensed
Banana bag, standard bag, freestanding bag
A banana bag, sometimes sold as a Muay Thai bag, is the long curved shape that gives you a thigh and a body at the same time. A standard cylindrical punch bag is shorter. You can kick a short bag. You will run out of target for a knee and a low kick sooner. We are describing the shape, not a brand's centimetre chart. Lengths and weights on shop filters were not re-verified. Read them on the product page the day you buy, and treat any "recommended user weight" as that brand's label.
A freestanding bag needs no ceiling. We have not measured how a base moves when you kick it, and we are not stating what the base should be filled with. If you live upstairs, the base can still be too heavy for the floor and too noisy for the neighbour. Those are practical limits, not a decibel test.
Filled or unfilled
Unfilled bags ship lighter and you fill them. We do not state a fill material. Follow the maker's fill guide if they printed one, and do not overfill past a marked line. A bag that will not hang straight is a bag that will hit you on the way back.
Filled bags arrive heavy. Check the delivery note for the weight before you assume a courier will carry it up stairs. We are not quoting a typical filled weight.
Hanging, in a UK flat or a garage
We will not print "a joist can hold X kilograms". We do not have that engineering source. Use these rules instead:
- No bag from a plasterboard ceiling, a light fitting, or a curtain pole.
- If you rent, ask the landlord in writing before you drill.
- If you cannot see a joist, stop and ask a qualified person to check the structure. We print no load rating.
- A garage or a garden frame is often simpler than a bedroom. The frame's own rating, on the maker's page, is the number to read. We have not copied one.
- Give the bag room to swing. A bag that hits a wall, a car, or a window is not a training partner.
Noise travels. A daily 7am session on a suspended floor is a neighbour problem even when the bracket is safe. That is manners and, in some leases, a term in the agreement. We have not reviewed a tenancy template.
What to wear on the bag
Wraps, then gloves. Bare knuckles on a bag are how hands split. The wrap guide is the method. 14oz or 16oz is the training range on the Fairtex chart. You do not need a 10oz glove to feel the bag. An ankle that will not take weight is a reason to stop. The NHS lines are on the ankle-support page.
A session that fits on one page
This is a template, not a medical clearance. Stop if something sharpens rather than warms.
| Block | Minutes | What you do |
|---|---|---|
| Skip or jog, then arms | 5 | Warm up until you are actually warm. |
| Round 1 | 3 | Jab, cross, kick at thigh height, both legs. Easy. |
| Rest | 1 | Hands down, breathe. |
| Round 2 | 3 | Add a knee on the end of a punch. Keep the standing leg bent. |
| Rest | 1 | |
| Round 3 | 3 | Five low kicks each leg, then hands. If the shin is done, stop the kicks. |
| Stretch | 5 | Hips and shoulders. Pain that stops you is a reason to see a GP, not a reason to push. |
Three rounds is enough on a new bag. Log the session on the free training log. Our 12-week heavy-bag programme is not on sale yet.
Where to buy a bag
Look for a long Muay Thai bag, an unfilled bag or a freestanding bag from a sports retailer, and take the price from their page. Buy a hanging bracket only where the product page states what it is rated for, and only after you know the ceiling.
We do not earn from links on this page. We do not link marketplaces for Fairtex, Twins or Yokkao.

FAQs
What kind of heavy bag is used for Muay Thai?
A long bag, often sold as a banana or Muay Thai bag, so you can punch, knee and kick on one target. A short cylindrical bag runs out of room for low kicks. We are describing the shape. Shop lengths and weights were not re-verified on 10 Oct 2026, so we do not print them. Read the maker's figures on the day you buy.
Can I hang a heavy bag in a flat?
Not from plasterboard, a light fitting, or a curtain pole. We will not quote a joist load, because we do not have an engineering source. If you rent, ask the landlord before you drill. A freestanding bag avoids the ceiling and can still be too heavy and too loud for an upstairs flat. A garage or a garden frame is often the simpler place.
Should I buy a filled or unfilled bag?
Unfilled bags ship lighter and you fill them. We do not state a fill material, because we did not test one material against another. Follow the maker's fill line if they printed one. Filled bags arrive heavy. Check the delivery weight before you assume it will go up your stairs. We are not quoting a kilogram figure, a centimetre, or a joist load.
What gloves do I need for a heavy bag?
Wraps, then gloves. Bare hands split. 14oz or 16oz is the training range on Fairtex's chart, and 16oz is what most UK gyms ask for if you also spar, according to Atlas copy from 8 Oct 2026. You do not need a lighter glove to feel the bag. The first-class glove and wrap list prices add up to £58.98.
