Muay Thai hand wraps

Last reviewed 10 Oct 2026

Hand wraps go on before the gloves. The Atlas catalogue of 8 Oct 2026 lists one wrap with a length and a price: RDX IBA-1, 4.5 metres, £18.99. A wrap supports the wrist and pads the knuckle for bag and pad work. It does not make sparring safe, and it is not a treatment for a hand injury.

Key facts:

  • RDX IBA-1, 4.5 m, catalogue price £18.99 on 8 Oct 2026.
  • 4 m, 4.5 m and 5 m are shop lengths. We did not measure hands against those lengths in a lab. Use the length guide below as a starting point and stop if the wrap will not close.
  • The steps are a common gym method. Your coach's method wins if it differs.
  • Pain, swelling or a knuckle that will not close is a reason to stop and speak to a clinician, not a reason to wrap tighter.

Hand wraps sit with the rest of the kit

Why people wrap

A glove is a fist-shaped pad. The wrist inside it can still fold if the hand is loose. A wrap gives the wrist a few firm turns and puts a layer of cloth over the knuckles. That is the whole job. We have not tested force reduction, so we will not quote a percentage.

Gel inner gloves are a different product. Shops sell them as a quicker pull-on layer. We did not open a maker test that compares gel to cotton, so we will not say one prevents injury and the other does not. If your gym requires a cloth wrap, a gel inner is not a substitute.

Ringside's own Mexican-style wrap, read 10 Oct 2026, is described as an elastic cotton blend, 2 inches wide and 180 inches long (about 4.57 m), with a thumb loop and a hook-and-loop close, and that page says the wrap is machine washable. That is one maker's product. It is not a rule for every packet that uses the word Mexican.

Which length to start with

Length on a page we read Product What we actually know
4.5 m RDX IBA-1, £18.99 catalogue price on 8 Oct 2026 The only length with a dated UK catalogue price we hold.
180 inches (about 4.57 m) Ringside Mexican-style, maker page read 10 Oct 2026 Elastic cotton blend, 2 inches wide, thumb loop. A US maker page, not a UK catalogue price.

If the wrap runs out before the wrist is covered, it is too short for your method. If you still have a metre left and the fist is a ball of cloth, it is too long or you have overlapped too much. Neither case is a hand-size diagnosis.

How to wrap, step by step

This is one common method for a thumb-loop wrap with a hook-and-loop close. It is coaching practice, not a medical protocol. We are not prescribing a number of turns. Cover the wrist and the knuckles. Stop if the fingers tingle.

  1. Sit down. Put the loop over the thumb. The cloth should come off the palm side or the back, whichever your coach uses. Pick one and keep it.
  2. Take turns around the wrist until the joint is covered. Firm means the wrist does not flop. It does not mean the hand changes colour.
  3. Across the back of the hand, from the wrist to the knuckle, then around the palm. This is the layer that sits under the glove's padding.
  4. Between the fingers. From the back of the hand, pass the wrap between little finger and ring finger, around, then between the next fingers, until each gap has had a pass. Do not pull the cloth so tight that the fingers splay or go numb.
  5. More turns over the knuckles, enough that the cloth covers the bones you strike with. Stop when the knuckles are covered. There is no standard count on this page.
  6. Finish on the wrist. The velcro should land on cloth, not on skin. Make a fist. The wrap should feel even. Open the hand. If a finger is white or tingling, undo it and redo step 4 with less pull.

A coach who wraps you for a fight may add more wrist and less finger. Copy the coach in the gym you actually train at.

Washing and replacing

Follow the label on the wrap you bought. Ringside's Mexican-style page says that SKU is machine washable. A different brand may say something else. Dry the wraps hanging or flat. A damp wrap left balled in the glove is how both items start to smell.

Replace a wrap when the velcro no longer holds, when the thumb loop has torn, or when the cloth has worn thin over the knuckle. We will not invent a month count. A wrap that has lost its velcro is finished even if the cloth looks fine.

What to buy with the wraps

The first-class basket in the 8 Oct 2026 model is gloves plus wraps: RDX Aura Plus T-17 gloves at £39.99 plus these wraps at £18.99, which sums to £58.98. That sum is arithmetic on two catalogue rows, not a shop bundle we saw advertised. Shin guards, a groin guard and shorts come later. The order is on the starter-kit page.

Where to buy: the 4.5 m wrap above, or a cotton 4.5 m alternative, from the brand or a UK kit retailer. Buy a longer wrap only if you already know 4.5 m runs out.

FAQs

How long should Muay Thai hand wraps be?

Start with 4.5 metres if you are buying the length we can actually price. That is the RDX IBA-1 in the Atlas catalogue of 8 Oct 2026, at £18.99. Four metres is a common shorter option and five metres is a common longer one. We did not measure those against hand sizes, so treat them as shop lengths and move up only if 4.5 metres will not cover your wrist.

What is the difference between Mexican wraps and cotton wraps?

Ringside's Mexican-style wrap, read 10 Oct 2026, is an elastic cotton blend, 2 inches wide and 180 inches long, with a thumb loop, and that page says it is machine washable. That is one maker's product, not a rule for every wrap labelled Mexican. Cotton wraps and gel inners are different products. If your gym asks for a cloth wrap, a gel inner does not replace it.

How tight should hand wraps be?

Tight enough that the wrist does not flop, and loose enough that the fingers are not numb or white. Make a fist and open the hand before you put the glove on. This page is a common gym method, not a medical instruction. Swelling, a knuckle that will not close, or pain that is not ordinary training soreness means stop and speak to a clinician.

How often should I wash hand wraps?

Follow the label on the wrap you bought. Ringside's Mexican-style page says that SKU is machine washable. A different brand may say something else, including a temperature. Dry them hanging or flat, and do not leave a damp pair balled in the glove. Replace them when the closure fails, the thumb loop tears, or the cloth over the knuckle wears through. We are not giving a lifespan in months.
