Best US Cities for Muay Thai

"Best city for Muay Thai" usually means one of two things: where you'll have the most choice of gyms, or where you'll find a serious fight scene. Those overlap, but not completely. This guide doesn't invent a ranking. It uses what we can count and check, and tells you the basis for every claim.
How we chose these cities
The list is built on three things:
- Directory size. How many gyms Muay Thai Atlas currently lists on each city page. The directory covers gyms that teach Muay Thai, which includes MMA and kickboxing gyms with Thai boxing classes, not only dedicated Muay Thai clubs. Counts are a snapshot from September 2026 and will change as listings are added.
- Depth. How many of those listings are flagged in our data as dedicated Muay Thai gyms or as having a fight team. This data is incomplete (many listings don't yet say either way), so treat it as a floor, not a total.
- What the gyms publish. For the example gyms below we checked their own websites for location, classes and competition programmes.
What we haven't done: we haven't trained at these gyms, and we don't rate coaching. City size also skews the counts, since bigger metros simply have more gyms. For how we score individual gyms, see our rankings methodology.
Los Angeles
The Los Angeles page is the largest US city page in the directory, with more than 40 listings, and there are further pages for surrounding areas such as Long Beach and North Hollywood.
Examples: Sick Side Muay Thai in West Adams says it runs basics classes for people with no experience and a competition team, with a two-week beginner trial for $37 at the time of writing (September 2026). The directory also lists Southpaw Muay Thai Club and The Yard Muay Thai as dedicated Muay Thai gyms.
Why it's here: the most choice of any single US city page in our directory.
New York City
New York is split across several directory pages: New York City (around 40 listings), New York and Brooklyn, plus smaller pages for Queens neighbourhoods. Combined, Muay Thai Atlas currently lists more than 60 gyms across the city.
Examples listed as dedicated Muay Thai gyms include Sitan Gym, Two Bridges Muay Thai, Next Generation Muay Thai and Iron Rooster Muay Thai in Brooklyn.
Why it's here: the biggest combined total, and good transit means more gyms are genuinely reachable.
San Diego
The San Diego page lists nearly 40 gyms, which is a lot for a city of its size. Listings include King Tiger Muay Thai, Team Loco Muay Thai and Aldama Muay Thai as dedicated gyms, and Pacific Roots Muay Thai with a fight team.
Why it's here: high gym density relative to population.
San Francisco Bay Area
The Bay Area page lists more than 30 gyms, with separate pages for San Francisco and Oakland. Dedicated Muay Thai listings include Western Muay Thai, Chaiyo Muay Thai and Berkeley Muay Thai & Fitness.
Why it's here: a large, spread-out scene; pick by which part of the Bay you live in.
Miami
The Miami page lists more than 25 gyms, and it has one of the higher counts of fight-team listings among US cities in our data. Vice City Striking in Allapattah says it specialises in Muay Thai, offers a free first class, and has coaches with more than 75 fights between them. Other listings include Sibai Muay Thai and Magic City Muay Thai.
Why it's here: good size plus a visible competitive side.
Houston
The Houston page lists more than 25 gyms, and more of them are flagged as dedicated Muay Thai than in any other US city in our data. Heritage Muay Thai in the Garden Oaks area advertises a one-week trial for $29 at the time of writing, plus competitive sparring classes. Other dedicated listings include Dynamite Muay Thai and White Tiger Muay Thai.

Chicago, Las Vegas, Denver and Philadelphia
These four have smaller directory totals (between about 15 and 25 each) but are worth a look.
- Chicago: more than 20 listings; fewer are flagged as dedicated Muay Thai in our data, so check each gym's timetable.
- Las Vegas: Xtreme Couture, founded by Randy Couture, runs Muay Thai within its striking programme and calls itself Nevada's only official Bang Muay Thai affiliate. Njokuani Muay Thai is listed as dedicated.
- Denver: Tankhead Thai Boxing publishes an unlimited monthly membership of $198 plus a $45 registration fee at the time of writing, and says beginners are welcome in all classes.
- Philadelphia: Heavy Hitters Thai Boxing on North Front Street runs fundamentals, technical sparring and fight team classes, with a $19.95 beginner on-ramp offer. Burning Spirits and Juniper Muay Thai are also listed as dedicated gyms.
What the counts don't tell you
A city with 40 gyms isn't automatically better for you than one with 15. What matters is whether there's a good gym within reach of where you live or stay. Once you've picked a city:
- Shortlist gyms within 30 minutes of home.
- Check whether Muay Thai is the gym's main discipline or one class among many.

- Compare trial offers. Several gyms above sell a paid trial week or fortnight, which is a cheap way to test the fit.
