Muay Thai Sheffield is gyms, not a weekly stadium.

Wicker Camp is the top floor of Unit 14, Clarence Works, Effingham Road, Attercliffe, S4 7YS. Sheffield Directory lists Saturday closed. The gym says Mick Mullaney founded it in the Wicker in 1977, lost the building to fire in 1989, and rebuilt it with Trix March. It calls itself one of the UK’s oldest Thai-boxing camps, affiliated to the World Muay Thai Council through the UKMF, and claims more champions than any other Thai-boxing gym in the country. About 3,000 sq ft holds a 16-foot ring. The first session is free. Friday 6pm sparring is graded only, as are the other intermediate and advanced classes. Women-only hours, closed to men, are Sunday 9am and Wednesday 6pm, from age 12. Coaches named on the class page include Trix March, a former world, European, Commonwealth and British champion, and James Ogden, an English and world champion.

Ni Yai Muay Thai, under Kru Christian Di Paolo, says it trains every day, for beginners through fighters. Dojos.co.uk lists the second floor of Blenheim Reach, 861 Ecclesall Road, S11 8TH. The gym site does not print that address.

The University of Sheffield club trains with the camp. Wednesday beginners, 7–9pm, are at Goodwin Sports Centre, S10 2TY. Other hours are at Effingham Road. Hallam students and apprentices can join as associate members, and sparring needs a Wicker Camp grading. An April 2026 camp post named Sheffield on 30 May and Birmingham on 20 June, including a £25,000 12-man tournament.

When to go

Sheffield’s climate is temperate oceanic. Wikipedia’s Met Office 1991–2020 normals for Weston Park give 831.6 mm of rain a year. December is wettest, at 86.9 mm, and May driest, at 54.5 mm. July’s average maximum is 21.4°C, and January and February average a minimum of 2.2°C. The daily mean is 4.6°C in January and 17.1°C in July.

May to September is the mildest time to walk between gyms. Trivago puts a typical hotel night around £86, usually £41 to £203: about £131 in June and £72 in December.

What it costs

At Wicker Camp a waged adult pays £6 for 90 minutes and £5 for 60. An unwaged or student adult pays £5 for 90 minutes, and under-18s pay £4. One-month cash is £40 waged or £33 unwaged or student. Adult direct debit is £30 a month for at least 12 months, and 12 months’ cash is £360. Both add £10 a person for a UKMF licence and insurance. A private hour is £30, for up to six people, or £125 for five hours. The university club quotes a separate 28-day rate of £32, or £26 with a club QR code.

Ni Yai is £7.50 a session or £50 a month for adults, and £5 or £40 for children. One-to-one lessons are offered, with no fee published. The students’ union club is £5 a session, £95 for a year, £65 for a semester and £45 to continue. Tickets are for students, including Hallam associate members, and a year includes insurance and kit.

Momondo lists Russell Scott Backpackers, 28 Brandreth Road, S6 3JU, from £25 a night, averaging about £35, against about £135 for a typical two-star hotel.

Where fighters stay

Two sessions a day at Wicker Camp are easier from Attercliffe or the east than from a city-centre hotel and a ride to S4. Ni Yai’s directory address is Ecclesall Road, S11, across the centre. Goodwin, S10, is only the university beginners’ room.

How to choose a gym

• Use pay-as-you-go or one-month cash for a short trip. The £30 direct debit is at least a year, and the £32 28-day rate is not the £40 cash month.
• Sparring, including Friday 6pm, is graded only. University kit for it is shin guards, 14–16 oz gloves, a gum shield and a groin guard. Beginners need clothes and water, and members can borrow kit.
• Confirm Ni Yai on Ecclesall Road. The gym site does not print it, and fight dates are posts rather than a weekly card.

Attercliffe or the east for Wicker Camp, Ecclesall Road for Ni Yai, and S10 only if Goodwin is the session that matters.

£30 an hour at Wicker Camp, or £125 for five hours. Ni Yai does not publish a private fee.
