The Manchester Muay Thai scene

Muay Thai in Manchester is spread across Greater Manchester: priced clubs in Bury and Whitefield, booked coaching in the south, and a show hall in Trafford Park.

GFC Muay Thai, at 1A Bright Street Mill, Bury, BL9 6AQ, calls itself Bury’s biggest Muay Thai centre. It describes more than 5,000 sq ft, 20 heavy bags and two 16 ft rings, with junior, teen and adult classes, a women-only hour on Tuesday, sparring, and an invite-only morning fighters’ class. The gym says Darren Phillips began with Master Sken and Sandy Holt in 1983 and founded the club, now run by Luke Phillips and Jodie Higson.

Phoenix Muay Thai Boxing in Whitefield lists sessions at £7.50 and one-to-ones at £35. A directory gives Unit 2e, Albert New Mill, Albert Close, M45 8EH.

Coach Hartley offers one-to-one and small-group Muay Thai in South Manchester, including beginners. No street is published, so book ahead. The coaching page names All Powers Gym as the room.

Hitman Fight League’s card on 28 February 2026 was at BEC Arena, Trafford Park, M17 1SN, doors at 2pm and fights at 3pm. Tickets were listed at £45 standing, £55 seated, £65 outer ringside and £90 ringside.

When to go

At Woodford, the Met Office 1991–2020 averages are 7.1°C by day and 1.1°C at night in January, and 20.7°C and 11.8°C in July. Rain is about 868 mm a year, about 53 mm in March and 97 mm in December, on about 156 days with at least 1 mm. Air frost averages about 40 days. Sunshine is about 1,385 hours a year, roughly 157 in July and 53 in December.

May to September is milder for roadwork. The club timetables are weekly, not a summer-only list.

What it costs

These are printed prices, not a citywide average.

GFC charges £11 for an adult drop-in, or £10 in cash, and £6.50 for a junior or teen, or £6 in cash. An adult month is £35 for one class a week, £50 for two and £65 unlimited. Junior unlimited is £45.

Phoenix is £7.50 a session and £35 for a one-to-one. The FAQ does not state how long that private lasts. Insurance after four weeks is £30 a year.

Coach Hartley charges £25 a person for a group hour, £100 a month for one group hour a week and £150 for two. A private is £25 for 30 minutes or £40 for an hour, and £100 or £150 a month if you take it weekly. Plans mixing group and private work are £250, £330 and £380 a month.

A published group drop-in on these pages runs from £7.50 to £25, and a regular adult membership at GFC from £35 to £65. A printed private is £35 a session at Phoenix or £40 an hour with Hartley.

VisitBritain’s June 2026 average daily rate for North West hotels was £105.13, a regional figure rather than a Manchester rate. For a month, the Office for National Statistics put Manchester’s average private rent at £1,373 in August 2026, up 4.2% on the year: £1,003 for one bedroom, £1,233 for two, £1,433 for three and £2,014 for four or more.

Nothing published says where fighters stay.

Bury covers GFC and Whitefield. The Manchester Evening News, citing ONS figures to August 2026, puts a one-bedroom at £686 in Bury, £1,003 in Manchester, £888 in Salford and £944 in Trafford.

YHA Manchester is at M3 4NB. The nightly price appears only after you choose dates. Overnight parking is a discounted £5 for 24 hours if reception is told. For a show, stay in the city, Salford or Trafford and travel to M17.

How to choose a gym

• At GFC, beginners are separated from sparring, and the morning fighters’ class is invite only.
• Compare the same product. £65 at GFC is unlimited group classes. £40 with Hartley is one private hour. £7.50 at Phoenix is a single session.
• Ask how long a private lasts. Only Hartley prints 30 and 60 minutes.
• Only GFC, of these pages, publishes a women-only hour.
• Cost the trip back from Bury or Whitefield after the class.
• Add Phoenix’s £30 annual insurance before you compare a monthly fee.
