The Bristol Muay Thai scene

Muay Thai Bristol is striking gyms and two university clubs. Shows are club cards, not a weekly stadium.

Combat Warriors, 7 Lawrence Hill, BS5 0BY, calls itself Bristol’s leading Muay Thai gym. Its site names the owner as UK ranked number 7 at 79 kg, and a coach as a WBC British champion. Morning fight camp is by WhatsApp. UWE trains there on Wednesday, 15:30–17:30.

Personal Combat Training (PCT), founded by Paul Studholme, teaches Muay Thai and Dutch-style K1, with a ring, a sauna and free weights. The classes page gives 0117 941 3383 and no street. A 2024 event page used 30 Pennywell Road, St Jude’s, BS5 0TG. Facebook has also shown 32 Picton Lane, Montpelier, BS6 5PX.

Sweat Box, Units 2–3 Princess Street, Bedminster, BS3 4AG, is more than 15,000 sq ft. Muay Thai, for all levels and for intermediate or advanced students, is on Gold and Platinum. Hours are Monday to Friday 06:00–22:00 and weekends 08:00–18:00.

The University of Bristol society, which calls itself the university’s largest martial arts society, uses the Carpenter Room in the Richmond Building: Wednesday and Saturday 17:00–19:00, Sunday 12:00–14:00, plus invite-only fight team. A British Martial Arts and Boxing Association coach leads them. The first session is free, and gloves and shin pads are provided. Its annual fight night is in the Anson Room.

UWE’s club, UKAM, uses Frenchay otherwise: Thursday and Saturday in the union studio, Friday and Sunday at the Centre for Sport. It reports Club of the Year in 2025, 2024 and 2022, about 200 members the year before, first on points at the 2024 Muay Thai Great Britain university championships and third overall in 2025, plus three South West interclubs.

When to go

Filton is the Met Office station for the city. For 1991–2020, January averages about 8.1°C by day and 2.4°C at night, and July about 21.7°C and 13.4°C. Rain is about 819 mm a year, about 48 mm in April and about 90 mm in November. June to August are mildest for roadwork. Classes still run in January.

There is no weekly show. Bristol stages its night in the Anson Room. UWE’s is traditionally late November, often with 16 oz gloves, shin guards and three two-minute rounds. In late September 2026 PCT’s events page listed a Jean Charles seminar for 17–23 October. A November 2025 post priced a Liam Harrison seminar at £50, or £45 for NHS staff and students. The events page enters that seminar as 25 April 2026, 11:00–13:00, and also prints 14 March, so check the time.

What it costs

Combat Warriors is £9 to £10 a class, or £40 to £65 a month. A private is £45 an hour, £185 for five or £325 for ten. Children aged 6 to 14 pay £5, or £35 a month.

Sweat Box is £10 pay-as-you-go for Muay Thai. A December 2025 English Language Centre guide put memberships from £50 a month for two martial arts classes a week. Gold and Platinum include the class, but those rates are not printed. Notice is one month.

PCT prints no drop-in or monthly fee. Privates are £55, or £300, £450, £600 and £700 for five, ten, fifteen and twenty sessions, used within three months.

University of Bristol Muay Thai is £70 a year, about 150 sessions at roughly 50p, or £45 a semester. UWE is £36 a year, plus an unpriced sports fee, and £20 for ten sessions. One session is free.

Trivago puts a typical Bristol night at about £114, usually £52 to £185: about £89 in December, £134 in July, and about £113 in September 2026.

Where fighters stay

Lawrence Hill and Easton suit Combat Warriors. St Jude’s and Montpelier are the two PCT pins, so confirm which is current. Bedminster is the walk to Sweat Box, and Clifton suits the Richmond Building. Frenchay is a separate campus: use a city room and a bus unless every session is at UWE.

How to choose a gym

• Drop-in is £9 to £10 at Combat Warriors and £10 at Sweat Box. The universities sell a year, or a semester at Bristol, after one free session.
• Combat Warriors prints £40 to £65 a month. PCT prints private blocks only. Confirm its address: the published pins do not match.
• Beginners are on the university and Sweat Box timetables. Fight-camp mornings are arranged. Ask whether the card is the Anson Room, Frenchay, or a PCT show.

Is there a fight every week?

No. University nights sit in term time. PCT lists one-off seminars and cards, not a standing bill.
