How to choose beginner Muay Thai gloves

Last reviewed 10 Oct 2026

Buy the ounce your gym names for sparring. Fairtex's chart, read 10 Oct 2026, calls 16oz the standard sparring size for most adults, and it prints no kilogram cutoff. Most UK gyms ask for 16oz, in Atlas copy from 8 Oct 2026. This is not a second ranking.

Key facts:

  • Coach first, chart second. 16oz is the usual sparring ask.
  • Dated catalogue prices, 8 Oct 2026: RDX Aura Plus T-17 £39.99, Fairtex BGV1 £114.99, Twins BGVL3 £149.99.
  • Wraps £18.99. Gloves plus wraps £58.98 at those catalogue prices.
  • No lab test. No claim that a dearer glove lasts longer.

Ounce first

The order

  1. Ask if gloves are lent for the trial.
  2. Ask the sparring ounce. Write it down.
  3. Buy that ounce from the brand or an authorised retailer, in a model whose size list includes it.

A 10oz pair can be right for a ruleset and wrong for Tuesday sparring. The 16oz collection note explains an audit that found fight gloves sitting on a sparring page. Do not repeat that mistake in a basket.

The chart, then the gym

Fairtex's page, read 10 Oct 2026, puts 8oz to 10oz on competition, 12oz as common for women and smaller hands, 14oz as general training, 16oz as standard sparring for most adults, and 18oz to 20oz as extra padding. It does not print a kilogram cutoff. Atlas copy from the same week says most UK gyms ask for 16oz once you spar. If those two sentences disagree with your coach, the coach wins.

Dated catalogue prices on 8 Oct 2026, from the catalogue, not from a marketplace: RDX Aura Plus T-17 gloves £39.99, RDX 4.5 m wraps £18.99, together £58.98. Fairtex BGV1 £114.99. Twins BGVL3 £149.99. The £35.00 gap between those two list prices is subtraction. It is not a lab result and not a claim about how long the foam lasts. SP5 shin guards at £89.99 are a different product. A 16oz collection audit on 8 Oct 2026 found 8oz and 10oz fight gloves sitting in that collection. Twins BGVL3 stays off a confirmed-16oz list until a Twins size line is read.

Our paid gear guide includes a bodyweight table, which it calls a rule of thumb, not a regulation. This free page does not reprint that table. Buy the ounce the gym named, from the brand or an authorised retailer.

FAQs

What gloves should a beginner buy?

The ounce the gym will let you spar in, from a seller you can name. Atlas copy from 8 Oct 2026 says most UK gyms ask for 16oz. Fairtex's own chart, read 10 Oct 2026, calls 16oz the standard sparring size for most adults, 14oz general, and 12oz common for smaller hands. There is no kilogram cutoff on that chart. If the coach says 14oz, the coach wins.

Is this a best-of list?

No. The glove guide already compares dated catalogue prices. This page is the decision: ask the gym, then buy a size the maker lists, from the brand or an authorised retailer. We have not lab-tested foam. A dearer catalogue price is not a claim that the glove lasts longer. The £35 gap between BGV1 at £114.99 and BGVL3 at £149.99 is arithmetic.

What if the gym lends gloves?

Then you do not need a pair for night one. Wraps can still be yours. The 4.5 m RDX wrap is £18.99 in the same catalogue. Gloves at £39.99 plus those wraps sum to £58.98 at catalogue prices on 8 Oct 2026. That sum is two list prices, not a bundle we saw advertised. Shin guards wait until partner kicking starts.

Why do 10oz gloves show up on a 16oz page?

Because a live collection, audited 8 Oct 2026, mixed fight ounces into a sparring grid. Membership of a 16oz page should be gloves whose size list includes 16. Competition ounces on the Fairtex chart are 8 to 10. They are the wrong Tuesday glove unless the ruleset says otherwise.
